Patent Reform: Debating Who Should Hear Patent Cases.Barnes & Thornburg LLP Todd Vare, a partner in the Intellectual Property Department of Barnes & Thornburg LLP, will moderate a highly entertaining debate between members of the Purdue University debate team over whether patent cases should be heard by juries or by a professional panel of patent experts. The Purdue Speech and Debate Team is a nationally competitive team of undergraduate students from all disciplines of study at Purdue. The team is renowned for having a highly diverse collection of creative and committed individuals. All team members compete in organized debate where they and their partner are offered a topic and after 15 minutes of preparation will engage in a 45 minute debate with a team from another university. The topics can range from ideas for reforming social security to the validity of militarily engaging a foreign country to revoking the pear tax in Paraguay. They also all compete in individual speech events where they prepare a program of speeches, monologues, and plays from which they competitively speak off of. Both of these forms of competition require a mastery of a wide range of topics with a depth of knowledge that they can use to critically analyze the issues. |

Getting Your Innovations Reviewed/Approved by EPA:A Mock Meeting with EPA’s New Chemicals Office This simulation will familiarize you with the Premanufacture Notice (PMN) review process, and identify what EPA looks for in PMN submissions for new nanoscale products that must be considered by EPA before commercialization. The NanoBusiness Alliance (NBA) recognizes that environmental, health, and safety (EHS) issues are of paramount importance and is committed to ensuring that its members are fully aware of and engaged in emerging legal and regulatory EHS issues pertinent to their operations. We are especially pleased this year to offer a full EHS Track presented by a faculty of distinguished EHS professionals from around the country. Instead of presenting EHS developments in a more traditional panel discussion format, NBA is pleased to offer two “mock” EHS experiences designed to emulate real-world experiences—a simulated discussion with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding the imminent submission of a Premanufacture Notification (PMN) under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), and a simulated Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspection. As importantly, you will have fun and enjoy yourself witnessing EHS experts make fools of themselves role-playing and trying to act!
